River trips sized for families, not for records

Four guided trips, each priced per boat for up to four guests and run by a licensed boatman who knows the water. Children's tackle, bait, life jackets, drinking water and a cool box are on every boat. The river decides which ones run each day.

Choose your water

Most families book the Backwater Starter on their first morning, then choose a longer run once the children are comfortable in the boat. Mix and match across your stay; we suggest a plan in your quote.

Backwater Starter

  • Half day · 3.5 hours
  • Ages 4+
  • Up to 4 guests

Our first trip for every family. A 15-minute run to the sheltered Sungai Kapit side channel, float fishing for tengadak, seluang and labang from the boat and the gravel bank, with a snack stop and a nature walk on the bar. Departs 7:30 am or 3:00 pm.

RM 160 per boat, incl. boatman, tackle and bait

Evening Seluang & Fireflies

  • 2 hours at dusk
  • Ages 4+
  • Up to 4 guests

A slow drift along the bank near the lodge from 6:15 pm with whip rods and tiny float rigs. Children count their seluang in a bucket before releasing them, then watch for fireflies on the ride home on clear nights.

RM 90 per boat, incl. boatman, tackle and bait

Baleh Day Run

  • Full day · 8 hours
  • Ages 7+
  • Up to 4 guests

Up into the Batang Baleh to clearer, faster water and gravel bars. Light spinning and bait fishing for semah, kelabau and, with luck, empurau, all released. Packed lunch, cool box and a rest stop at a longhouse landing included. Departs 7:00 am.

RM 380 per boat, incl. boatman, tackle and bait

Pelagus Rapids Run

  • Full day · 9 hours
  • Ages 10+
  • Up to 4 guests

Upriver to the Pelagus stretch above Kapit, one of the most dramatic sections of the Rajang. Offered only in low, clear water and only when Michael is satisfied with the morning call. Casting from safe banks below the rapids; not a white-water ride.

RM 520 per boat, incl. boatman, tackle and bait

Life jackets on at the jetty, bags and lunch loaded, a short briefing for the children.

  3. 09

  5. 15

River rules we keep, and ask you to keep

The upper Rajang is shared water. Some stretches are managed by local communities under their own rules, often called tagang, and these rules come first. We brief every guest before their first trip.

Conservation

  • All empurau and semah are released, photographed in the water rather than held up on the bank.
  • Children fish with barbless hooks; adults are asked to flatten barbs on the Baleh and Pelagus runs.
  • We never move live fish between rivers or ponds, and we ask guests not to bring live bait from elsewhere.
  • Only species that are not protected, and only what you will eat that evening, come back for the kitchen.
  • Where a community or the relevant state authority requires a permit for a stretch, we arrange it before your trip and pass the fee through at cost.

Safety on board

  • Life jackets are worn by every guest from jetty to jetty, including strong swimmers.
  • Every longboat carries a licensed boatman, a first-aid kit, drinking water, a throw line and a charged phone.
  • No trips run in poor light, during thunderstorms, or when debris is coming down after heavy upriver rain.
  • Children sit in the middle of the boat while it is moving and stand only when the boatman says so.
  • The boatman's decision to turn back is final; any unused trip is rescheduled or not charged.
§ 04

Tackle we supply, and what to bring if you are keen

Everything needed for each trip is in the boat. Keen adults are welcome to bring their own gear; Michael is happy to look over it the evening before.

Children use 1.5 m light rods with small spinning reels spooled with 6 lb line, a float, a split shot and a size 10 barbless hook. For older children on the Baleh run we step up to 2.1 m rods with 10 lb line. Adults get 2.1 m to 2.4 m spinning sets with 12 lb to 15 lb line and a small selection of spoons and spinners.

Bait is mostly bread paste, worms, river prawns from the market and fruit for mahseer. If you bring your own gear, a 2–8 g spinning outfit covers almost everything. Please leave treble hooks at home for the children's trips; we change them to singles on any lure that goes in a child's hands.

Trips are priced per boat, so a family of four pays the same as a couple. If you are a group of five or more, we split you across two boats and quote both.

Ask which trips suit your children's ages.

Send a WhatsApp with your arrival date, number of nights and the ages of your children. Jenny or Michael will reply with available rooms, a suggested trip plan and a written quote, usually within two hours between 8:00 am and 10:00 pm.
